Spring Festival Cleaning

The Spring Festival is a time for families to gather and celebrate the coming of the new year. In old China, this celebration was preceded by a thorough house cleaning known as "spring cleaning." This tradition was believed to sweep away bad luck and make way for good fortune in the coming year.

My father and I started our spring cleaning early in the afternoon. The atmosphere was tense yet busy as we set about dusting and wiping every corner of our home. I tackled my study area, putting books back on the shelves and organizing my study materials. Dad, meanwhile, took care of the windows, cleaning them with a brush and old newspapers to achieve a sparkling clean finish.

As we worked, the room gradually transformed. The bookshelves looked neat and tidy, and the windows were bright and clear. It was a rewarding feeling to see the space we had cleaned and organized. I imagined my mom's surprise when she came home from work and saw the clean and tidy house.

In addition to cleaning the house, we also prepared for the New Year by hanging spring couplets, which are traditional red scrolls inscribed with auspicious messages, on the walls or doorframes. These couplets symbolize the hope for good luck and prosperity in the coming year.

By the end of our cleaning session, we were tired but satisfied. The house looked and felt brand new, ready for the festivities to begin. Spring cleaning is not just a chore； it's an important part of the celebration, symbolizing a fresh start and a clean slate for the new year.
